2 21. Battle of Jutlandfought off the coast of Denmark, May- June, 1916. This fight between the British and the Germans was the only major sea battle of WWI (The Great War).

4 22.Battle of the Sommefought in France, June-November, 1916. The British began to use tanks. 23. Second Battle of the Marne July-August, 1918. Germany suffered defeat. This led to the end of the war.

11 8. Pres. Election of 1916- Wilson a Dem. Ran on the slogan He kept us out of war. Charles E. Hughes a Rep., criticized Wilson for not taking a strong enough stand against Germany. Wilson won by a narrow margin.

12 9. Feb. 1, 1917-Ger. violated the Sussex Pledge. 10. Feb. 3, 1917-The U.S. broke off diplomatic relations with Ger. And began arming merchant ships.
