3 Vocabulary Words Birth rate - The number of live births each year for every 1,000 people Death rate – The total number of deaths each year for every 1,000 people Life Expectancy - Average number of years a person is expected to live

4 Vocabulary Words Literacy Rate - Percentage of people who can read and write Per capita GDP - Average income one person makes in one year Urban - To live in the city Rural - To live in the country or a village

5 Developed Country Characteristics World’s wealthiest countries Good educational values Widely available healthcare Many manufacturing and service industries Modern farming technology (commercial farming means you farm for others and make a profit) Access to modern telecommunications Free Enterprise (you can own your own business) Democracy-freedom to make free enterprise work

6 Developing Country Characteristics World’s poorer countries ¾ of the world’s people live here Many live by subsistence farming (means you farm for yourself-make very little money if any) Poverty and unemployment widespread Few manufacturing and service industries Limited health services Overcrowded schools Low literacy rate Modern telecommunications seldom found Export minerals and resources to developed countries “If you sell raw materials, you’ll stay poor. If you use them to make manufactured goods, you’ll become rich!”

7 Middle Income Characteristics Have features of both developed and developing countries Cities may be modern, but rural areas and small towns are often poor New industries are forming and many people are switching from rural life to city life.
