Preventing Pollution Emily Gilmore

What is Pollution? Five Different Types of Pollution: Air Pollution – Vehicles – Natural Sources Forest Fires Volcano Eruptions Water Pollution – Improper Waste Disposal Soil Pollution – Hazardous waste – Sewage spills Noise Pollution Noise Pollution disturbs wildlife, causes hearing loss, etc. – Traffic, airports, concerts, etc Personal Pollution (polluting ones own body) – Smocking, Drinking, etc Pollution is the undesirable state of the natural environment being contaminated with harmful substances as a consequence of human activities

An estimated 50,000 people a year may die from pollution Animals exposed to pollution could end up being killed For example, fish exposed to highly polluted waters About 27 million children live in areas with unhealthy air pollution Pollution is a cause of Global Warming

Makes people healthier Helps save wildlife Makes the world we live in last longer Makes it easier to breathe (helpful for those with asthma)

Ways to Prevent Pollution:

R ecycling Recyclable Items Glass Paper Plastic Steel Cans What is recycling? Recycling is the process of re-using a given product (beyond its intended use), or producing a new product from a recyclable material.

How Recycling Helps Recycling helps with preventing pollution because it uses less fossil fuels, that could eventually harm the environment, How? It reduces the amount of industrial products that are made in factories. Less recycling can equal this: What are in Fossil Fuels? Fossil Fuels Like gasoline, diesel, and coal may contain Methane Sulfur Dioxide Carbon Dioxide

Conserve your driving Driving less sends less gasses into the air Ways to drive less are: Carpooling Not making a trip to the store for only one small item Walking whenever you can During the Summer, turn of the air conditioning off and roll down the windows (it uses less gas) Avoid Drive-Thrus (it waste gas) Use public transportation (like busses and the Front Runner) as much as possible

Don’t Leave Your Car Idling! Idling your car for 2 minutes can waste a mile of gas! Idling you car is leaving it on to warm it up or to quickly do something. Idling a car for ten minutes can send a pound of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere Diesel engines produce more than 40 hazardous air pollutants that are released when idling.

The Health Triangle Physical: With cleaner air, it is easier to run around in sports and other activities Social: With cleaner air, it is easier to go outside and meet your friends Mental/Emotional: You may feel bad abut yourself if you realized that you have polluted
