Fundamentals of Engineering for Honors – ENG H191 Lecture 21 Question of the Day What do burglar alarms, windshield wiper blades, Kevlar vests and laser printers have in common? ANSWER: They were all invented by women!

Fundamentals of Engineering for Honors – ENG H191 Lecture 22 Today Learning Styles – Learn how you learn

Fundamentals of Engineering for Honors – ENG H191 Lecture 23 Learning – A Matter of Style Do you understand your own learning style? Do you understand the style to which or by which you teach, answer questions, ask questions? Is everyone not “normal” like me?

Fundamentals of Engineering for Honors – ENG H191 Lecture 24 Learning – A Matter of Style Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) Kolb’s Learning Style Model Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument (HBDI) Felder-Silverman Learning Style Model

Fundamentals of Engineering for Honors – ENG H191 Lecture 25 Index of Learning Styles go to: http://www.engr.ncsu.edu/learningstyles/ilsweb.html Complete inventory and submit Please put name and team number on it Print 2 copies of your results Give 1 copy of your printout to me. 7 Fundamentals of Engineering for Honors – ENG H191 Lecture 26 Learning Styles and Strategies What is measured is preference, NOT competence Better understanding of how you learn can help regardless of the teacher’s style Understanding your preference and that of others may help in teamwork and engineering practice

Fundamentals of Engineering for Honors – ENG H191 Lecture 27 Active and Reflective Learners Active learners tend to retain and understand information best by doing something active with it. “Let’s try it and see how it works.” Reflective learners prefer to think about it quietly first. “Let’s think it through first.”

Fundamentals of Engineering for Honors – ENG H191 Lecture 28 Sensing and Intuitive Learners Sensors tend to like learning facts. Patient with details, usually good at memorizing facts. Intuitives tend to prefer discovering possibilities and relationships. Better at grasping new concepts, comfortable with abstractions.

Fundamentals of Engineering for Honors – ENG H191 Lecture 29 Visual and Verbal Learners Visual learners remember best when seeing pictures, flow charts, diagrams, demonstrations. “Draw it out for us.” Verbal learners get more out of words; written and spoken. “Describe it to the rest of the group.”

Fundamentals of Engineering for Honors – ENG H191 Lecture 210 Sequential & Global Learners Sequential learners tend to gain understanding in linear steps. Trees, Many Trees, All Together = Forest. Global learners tend to learn in large steps, “suddenly get it”. Lots of Trees = Forest Why was that again?
