10 Forest Climax Trends based on Soils

11 Stand Cover Types RED OAK- NORTHERN HARDWOOD DEFINITION AND COMPOSTION – Red Oak and some combination of northern hardwood species (including Sugar Maple, American Beech and Yellow Birch) together constitute a majority (more than 50%) of the stand. This type should only be used when each Red Oak and some combination of northern hardwoods comprise greater than 20% of the basal area, but neither individually is over 50% of the total. If American Beech alone comprises more than 20% of the stand the Red Oak –Beech type ( as defined in 1988) should be used. Stands with more than 50% of Red Oak should be typed as Northern Red Oak (SAF type 55). Stand with more than 50% northern hardwoods should be typed as Sugar Maple –Beech- Yellow Birch (SAF type 25). Associates include White Ash, Red Maple, and Basswood. GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION – This type if found throughout the state. ECOLOGICAL RELATIONSHIPS – This type is found semi-rich to rich sites, bowls and benches. Successional tendencies are toward northern hardwoods. About 45 different cover types are typically used on state land to define the “overstory”, SAF Forest Cover Types, and several additions frequently found on state land and defined by Forests & Lands staff.
