THE INTERACTIVE PERIODIC TABLE
3
ABSTRACT The Interactive Periodic Table module is designed based on the Smart School teaching and learning concept. This module is to complement the topic of “Classifications Of Elements In the Periodic Table” which is one of the learning areas in the Malaysian General Science Form 4 Curriculum Specifications. The aim of this module is to create interest and to make teaching and learning of this topic using interactive presentation more interesting to the Arts Students who find learning Science difficult. This teaching module is user-friendly as it uses Microsoft Office Software which is familiar to both students and teachers. One special feature of this interactive module is that, it can be used by both the teachers and students. The teachers can use it as a teaching courseware while the students are able to carry out “hands-on” activities such as crossword puzzles, colouring activities, arranging of elements in the Periodic Table as well as reinforcement activities to aid them in their learning process. Different approaches are integrated in this module. Guided Learning Approaches are presented in the Concept Map while the history and concept of the Periodic Table are presented through Power Point Presentations. From observations and feedback received since the introduction of this module in the year 2002, it is found that students enjoy using this module and are able to master the subject matter better. INTRODUCTION This Interactive Periodic Table is a model on how ICT is incorporated in the teaching and learning process. The opportunity to attend two courses – Curriculum Orientation Course and Learning Science Using The Smart School Concept at RECSAM in 2002 – has challenged me to design a module to integrate ICT in the teaching and learning process. During both courses, 10 pedagogical skills were revisited with an emphasis on using ICT. It is hoped that this Interactive Periodic Table with hands-on activities will get students interested in the subject matter. BACKGROUND In the Malaysian Curriculum, General Science is a compulsory subject for all students of form 4 and form 5 with the exception of those studying in the pure science stream. Science is often viewed as a difficult and boring subject to this set of students. The teacher usually approaches this subject by asking the students to gather information using the textbook and sometimes through conducting experiments. For topics such as Matter, Motion, Coordination, and Light such approaches are inadequate. Other interesting teaching tools are required to make this subject more appealing to this group of students. Incorporating ICT to aid in the learning and teaching process is considered to be one of them. This topic is chosen as the pioneer topic in the designing of this ICT based module because from observations, it is ranked as one of the most difficult topics by the students. Examination results also reveal the inability of students to comprehend this topic well.
