IF SOMETHING IS ALIVE IT MUST CARRY ON SEVERAL DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES IN ORDER TO STAY ALIVE. THESE ARE THE LIFE PROCESSES. Life Processes
2
1. Nutrition When an organism takes materials from its environment and changes it into forms it can use Ingestion- take in food Egestion- eliminate indigestible food
3
2. Transportation This is how substances are distributed throughout the organism. Some organisms use only diffusion, others also have circulatory systems.
4
3. Respiration Releasing chemical energy in stored nutrients Aerobic respiration- sugar is broken down in the presence of oxygen Anaerobic respiration- sugar is broken down with no oxygen present
5
4. Synthesis and Assimilation Can make simple chemicals into complex ones and break complex chemicals and into simpler ones
6
Growth Organisms increase in size/maintain/repair themselves.
7
Excretion Removing wastes from the body
8
Regulation Maintain a stable internal environment
9
Reproduction Producing new organisms of their own kind Asexual reproduction- one parent, offspring identical to the parent Sexual reproduction- two parents, offspring not identical to the parent (it will have a combination of their DNA)
10
Metabolism The process of all cells having chemical reactions inside of them *complete the crossword puzzle for homework using this note and the characteristics of life note
