2 Who made the elevator?  Elisha Graves Otis is best known for making the elevator.  He was born August 3, 1811.  He died April 8, 1861.

3 Origin of Hoist and Pulley  The origin of the hoist is very old, and pulley systems have been in use since ancient times.  They would use pulleys get water or raise objects.  Thousands of years ago, hoists must have played a great role in the construction of the great pyramids of Egypt.  The first documented proof of their use was from Greece in 236 B.C., when Greek scientist and inventor, Archimedes, invented a hoist with a rope and pulley.  It is believed these devices were first used in the Roman Emperor’s palace.

5 What Do elevators do?  Elevators are used to move or elevate someone somewhere.  An elevator is a platform.  IT either opens or closes.  Elevators are usually in apartments or hotels.

6 Extra facts  Elevators have been around for 153 years.  The world’s first elevator was installed in a five-story hotel on Broadway in New York in 1857.  The first person to use a DC motor for an elevator was Wegster in 1884 in the United States.  A few years later, in 1889, Norton Otis, son of Elisha Otis, developed an electric elevator.
