3. What is Skin Cancer? An abnormal cell mass
mitosis is no longer being controlled
Two general classifications of cancer:
Benign: doesn’t spread (encapsulated)
Malignant: This means the cancer metastasizes (spreads) to other parts of the body
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer

Basal Cell
Squamos Cell
Melanoma

5. Basal Cell Carcinoma Least malignant Most common type
Arises from stratum basale
Typically on the face
Edges tend to be pale in color

7. Squamos Cell Carcinoma
Rapid growth and can metastasize to lymph nodes if not removed
Early removal allows a good chance of cure
Arises from stratum spinosum
Scaly, red, round elevated lesion
Also found on head- scalp, ears, lips; hands

9. Malignant Melanoma
Cancer of the melanocytes (cells that produce melanin)
Metastasizes rapidly to lymph and blood vessels
This can result in death
Detection uses ABCD rule
** there is such thing as a benign melanoma- this is just another name for a mole
