2 Publisher: Disney Hyperion Books Date: 1998 Genre: Fiction Summary: This is a book about children from different cultures bringing their lunch to school. The kids make fun of the Japanese girl Yoko’s lunch. The teacher then sets up an International Food Day at school and everyone brings in something from their culture. This allowed the children to taste something from other cultures and learn that looks can be deceiving. Unit Themes: Different Cultures, Food Activity: Have an international Food Day and have each child bring a dish from their culture. Each child must try one bite of everything. What makes this book multicultural? This book teaches the reader about family food traditions from cultures around the world. YOKO by Rosemary Wells

She finds out that her family is having duck for Thanksgiving instead of turkey. She is upset until she realizes that other children in her class did not eat turkey for thanksgiving either. Tuyet really liked the duck and even ate seconds. Unit Themes: Vietnamese tradition and Traditions from around the world Activity: Have children write out a list of foods that they eat at Thanksgiving or foods that they see on the table at Thanksgiving. Discuss and write the foods on the board to see that other cultures have different traditions. What makes this book multicultural? The city has a big parade, games, music, carnival rides, dancing and Mexican food. It discusses the history of Cinco de Mayo and how it came about. The book also discusses some of the traditional Mexican foods. Unit Themes: Spanish, Latino culture, traditions, Cinco de Mayo holiday Activity: Have the children make their own Maracas, so that they can have an instrument to play along with music. What makes this book multicultural? This book is multicultural because it discusses the importance of Cinco de Mayo to Spanish and Latino’s culture. Date: 1998 Genre: Fiction Summary: Little Bill makes a Valentine for a little girl named Mia but he is afraid to give it to her because the other children in their third grade class might tease him. He throws the card in the recycle bin. Then sees the other boys giving her cards, so he goes and gets his card back out and gives it to her. Unit Themes: Valentines Day, African American culture Activity: Read this book near Valentines Day and have the children make Valentines cards to pass out to everyone. Teach them that giving out these cards, is out of kindness; not liking someone for a girlfriend or boyfriend. What makes this book multicultural? 6 Publisher: Group West Date: 2004 Genre: Contemporary Fable Summary: A little boy named Jamari wonders why Baba Mdogo plays the drum every day. When Baba gets old he turns the drumming over to Jamari. Jamari gets married and has children, soon he forgets to play the drum. Then one day the sky turns black and the ground grew hot and began to melt beneath his feet. He then remembered Baba told him that’s what would happen if he quit beating the drum. He realized to save Opka he had to play the drum. Unit Themes: Traditions of Africa, African American culture Activity: Have the children make a drum with an empty oatmeal container, balloon and rubber band. What makes this book multicultural? This book is multicultural because the village is of African American descent. 7 Publisher: Henry Holt and Company Date: 1968 Genre: Ancient Chinese Folktale Summary: The story is about the Chinese naming there first born sons really long names and their second with a short name. Tikki Tikki Tembo-no sa rembo-chari bari ruchi-pip peri pembo was the boys name and one day he falls into a well, because his name was so long and it took everyone a while to understand his brother Chang, he was in the well far too long. The moon rose many times before he was the same again. From that day on the Chinese decided it was wise to name all their children with short names. Unit Themes: Chinese traditions and culture Activity: Have children come up with long rhyming names and say them five times fast and see how difficult this would be to try to tell someone that person is in danger. What makes this book multicultural? This book is multicultural because it’s an Ancient Chinese Folktale. It tells about the Chinese tradition of naming their first born son with a long name and their second son with a short name.
