Preparatory projects The NPP 2007 – 2013 Programme Monitoring Committee delegated authority to the Programme secretariat to approve preparatory projects and make funding decisions. The Programme Secretariat has assessed and approved 11 and received and assessed 21 preparatory projects 4 are being assessed Committed funds preparatory projects: 173 000 Euro ERDF (500 000)

Aviemore – NPP 2008 annual event This year’s annual conference and programme launch in Aviemore Scotland was aimed at defining and dressing strategic topics for the Northern Periphery Programme 2007-20013 with a view to a potential strategic main application call in 2009. Tailored workshops identified and elaborated on potential topics of a strategic nature for the NPP area. The following topics were discussed with the aim of developing products and services of benefit to the whole programme area leading to strategic project topics.

Project Gap Analysis Analysis of broad project themes for main and preparatory projects Currently identified gaps: In Priority 1, the Objective ” To facilitate development through the use of advanced information and communication technologies and transportation in the programme area” and the four themes: i)increased use of ICT to overcome distance iii) developing innovative product and service solutions for developing and maintaining transport infrastructure with regard to roads, railways, airports and ports under harsh climatic conditions iv) development of transport schemes that benefit rural communities, such as new maritime routes v) maritime safety in relation to remote areas with arctic, harsh conditions.

Project Gap Analysis Currently identified gaps: In Priority 2, in the Objective ” To strengthen the synergies between environmental protection and growth in remote and peripheral regions and the two themes: ii) Impact and possible implications of climate change and means to reduce it at a community level iii) Development of small scale renewable energy solutions Also in Priority 2, in the Objective ” To improve sustainable development in peripheral regions by strengthening urban-rural relations and enhancing regional heritage” and the two themes: i)urban-rural partnerships for new service solutions and iv)promotion of natural and cultural heritage that supports the development of sustainable industries

Next Steps 3rd call pre announcement June 20th, 2008 3rd call officially launched, August 15th 2008 One day seminar – ”How to apply” – August 21st, 2008 in Copenhagen for potential main project applicants Partenariat to be held in Umeå 2-3 September to develop preparatory projects based on PMC identified potential strategic project themes End Date for the 3rd call - September 26th, 2008 PMC project decisions December 3-4, 2008 in Copenhagen. 4th call for project application spring 2009 and possibly a Strategic project call spring 2009
