Welcome to Day #7 Today we are going to talk about: 1.Bully Prevention 2.Identifying Heroes

& Being a “Bully Blocker” Click the link below for the video (7:26 minutes) Learning about Bullying http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcFICCVWliY&feature=youtu.be

What is “bullying?” What does it look like? What does it sound like? What does it feel like?

Some things you might not have thought of … * Bullying is when a group of people block a hallway so others can’t get by, even if it isn’t on purpose. * Bullying is when you talk about, make fun of someone, or spread gossip. * Bullying is taking someone else’s food when they have not offered to share it.

This is what every student can do to stop bullying… Turn to page 12 in your Student Agenda. Review the Anti-bullying Pledge on the back cover.

Of course we want you to handle it, if you can, in a positive way – but if you can’t, these people can help: A Friend Your Parents A Teacher A Counselor The Vice Principal or Principal

Turn and talk to the person next to you: “How do you know when someone is a hero?”

when terrorist tried to take that freedom away, regular people – just like you and me – stepped up and stepped in, because it was the right thing to do. They became heroes because they put someone else’s needs ahead of their own.

The Pentagon Washington, D.C. The World Trade Center Towers New York City What do you know about what happened that day?

Back in 2001, students at Marston had strong feelings about what happened and expressed it in the art work that is on the bulletin board on University Avenue (the main hallway).

“One of the worst days in American history saw some of the bravest acts in Americans’ history. We’ll always honor the heroes of 9/11. And here at this hallowed place, we pledge that we will never forget their sacrifice.”

“If we learn nothing else from this tragedy, we learn that life is short and there is no time for hate.”

We stop to remember that we are part of a much larger community than Marston Middle School. We do that with the pledge of allegiance, or a patriotic song. We do it because there are citizens of our nation all over the world who volunteer to protect our country and our freedom.

By making friends with someone new. By inviting someone to eat lunch with you. By supporting people who are unique. By including someone who seems like they are alone. By smiling and being supportive. By making sure that no one feels left out.

By never, ever, being a bully, or standing by when you see someone else being bullied.

Marston Mariners have Pride in Excellence… …pride in excellent academics, and pride in excellent in behavior!
