First, let’s review! What is the Texas Parent Survey?

State Performance Plan Indicator 8 All states must report the “percent of parents with a child receiving special education services who report that schools facilitated parent involvement as a means of improving services and results for children with disabilities.” The state of Texas surveys a sampling of parents of students receiving special education services to answer Indicator 8.

Texas Parent Survey School districts and charter schools in Texas are selected to participate in the survey process. Texas conducts a random sampling of students to receive surveys based on the federal requirements. Districts with over 50,000 students receive surveys each year. (2006-2012)

Annual Performance Report The following questions are used to determine the district and state results for the APR –I am considered an equal partner –School communicates regularly regarding IEP –Teachers understand my child’s needs –My concerns and recommendations are considered The state measurable target for 2010-2011 is 76.0%. The state target was met with a score of 76.0%. –Region 20’s score was 76%.

Guess What? There haven’t been any significant changes in the results of the survey state wide or region wide! Data has been pretty consistent from year to year.

1.The school provides agency information to assist my child in the transition from high school. 2. Special education services helped my family get outside services for my child.

Spanish speaking parents expressed a greater satisfaction with special education services. English speaking parents expressed less satisfaction with special education services.

Need for more communication and information: More timely reports on student’s progress Academic strategies that can be utilized at home Strategies for supporting the student Community resources information Parent support groups (district level) Trainings and workshops Parents want to be kept informed and want to know how to contribute to the academic progress of their child(ren).

Highlights: Continue to meet statewide target Growth areas continue to be: –Teachers understand my child’s needs. –I communicate with my child’s teacher(s) regularly regarding my child’s IEP progress and other important issues. –School personnel provide me information to help me assist in my child’s education. –School personnel provide information on parent organizations, community agencies, or trainings related to the needs of my child.

Growth areas… –The school provides information on agencies that can assist my child in the transition from high school. –The school provides transition services to help my child reach his or her goals after high school. –Special Education services have helped my family get the services that my child needs outside of school.

Will the Parent Survey continue beyond 2012? Yes, 2 more years were added to the data collection. The approach that will be used is still undetermined. The survey questions more than likely will change after this year.
