3. The curriculum is completely new to East Middle School! The previous curriculum consisted of learning about the Eastern Hemisphere from the beginning of time to contemporary times. The current curriculum is from Oakland Schools and It pertains to prehistory up to 300 A.D. of the entire World. The seventh grade social studies curriculum focuses on early world history and geography with a deliberate focus on the content literacy. Students begin their exploration into world history with a focus on historical thinking.

5. The Road to Success! There are three trimesters in the school year. Assignments, tests, quizzes, are all averaged equally. Students are given study strategies and time management strategies in class. Tests, quizzes, and informal assessments are developed from the assignments and projects. Students discuss content orally in class within classroom discussion. Students are expected to ask questions respectfully and thoughtfully. Assignments become homework. This means: If the student does not finish an assignment in class, it is completed as homework. It is due the next school day unless otherwise noted in class. Note: All work done in class is not considered an assignment, but an enhance- ment for learning. Therefore, it may/may not be taken home in case it is lost.

6. Student Responsibility Parents may check the East website for the curriculum and worksheets in three weeks: East website Academic Social Studies Julia Christmon (Wiki) Maintain the completion of assignment book. Turn in assignment on time. Late assignments: 20% off. Late assignments are accepted during the teaching of the related unit of study and not after. Extra credit is given AT THE SAME TIME to all students. Extra credit is not given to students just because they have an unfavorable grade. Extra credit is PLANNED within each teaching unit for all students and is given by the teacher to the students. Parents are not emailed due dates for assignments, tests, quizzes, or extra credit. Students record and review all dates in their assignment book while in school and are expected to share planner and dates with parents. They Can Do It!!

7. Classroom Management Classroom Etiquette Absolutely, unequivocally, NO Gum Chewing! Only water is allowed during class. All students are in their seats when the bell rings. NO! verbal or physical communication during tests and quizzes. Upon return from an absence, students get absent work from the absent bend or wiki, according to the day they were absent. If students are expected to be absent three days or more, they must email the office to inform teachers. Students are expected to be polite: “Hello;” “I’m sorry;” “Thank you;” “Please...” No talking when the teacher or fellow student is speaking. Upon exiting the classroom, students are expected to pick up paper from the floor. Maintain neatness at all times! Students are expected to push in their OWN chairs. Students are not allowed to go to lockers during class. They are taught to bring all materials to class. Emails are answered within one to two days, unless hindered by mtgs.
