3 Teaching experience  3 rd year at HBMS.  Starting 7 th year of teaching orchestra.  Previous positions:  2009-2013: Orchestra Director at Sul Ross MS in Northside ISD  Turn a failing orchestra program into a UIL Varsity Sweepstake school with a full time orchestra position  2009 New Teacher of the Year Winner  2012-2013: Orchestra Assistant at Garcia MS in Northside ISD  2 UIL Sweepstake awards

4 Teaching Accomplishments  Made HBMS Orchestra into an UIL Varsity Sweepstakes program – 2 years in a row.  1 st time for HBMS Orchestra in 2014  Students received Outstanding Awards at UIL Solo & Ensemble Contest.  Bringing in fun music opportunities for students.

6 Spring 2015- UTSA Symphony Concert  Hear a college level concert  Hear from professors & students that you can still join the orchestra in college and don’t have to be a music major  Orchestra helps you get scholarships (non-music major included)

8 LTISD Varsity Fine Arts Requirements: All varsity music groups must learn the region music. It is not required to compete at region. What is region? Student competing against other students in the area such as Leander ISD, Round rock ISD, etc. Compete with the best. If you get in after the audition, it means your child is one of the best in the region. Making it into region orchestra is a honor. Audition forms are available on website & $15 to register.

14 Grading procedures  60% Major  Playing & Written Tests  Dress Rehearsals & Concert performances  Competitions  40% Minor  Classroom Performance  Quizzes  Supplies  Practice logs on Charms

15 Classroom expectations  Bring instrument, orchestra binder, & accessories everyday to class.  Check the board for announcements, class work, & homework.  Respect the teacher, room, and instruments.

16 Tuning Etiquette  Once the bell rings, the teacher or student leader will turn the machine on to sound the “A”.  Beginners: Violin/violas will form a line and the teacher will tune.  Concert/Philharmonic: Student will individually tune each string one by one.

17 Rehearsal Etiquette  Listen silently during instruction time.  Take responsibility for yourself and your actions.  Play only on your instrument during the appropriate time.  Stop immediately when the conductor stops rehearsing.  Follow instructions and show courteous rehearsal etiquette.  Raise your hand and receive permission before speaking or leaving your seat.  Follow the HBMS behavioral expectations and LTISD Student Code of Conduct Handbook.  DO NOT start to pack up before the class is dismissed. It is rude and distracting.  Wait for your director to dismiss you by sections/rows.

18 Homework policy  Practice at least 80 minutes a week  Log in times on to CHARMS  80 minutes = 100 points  1 extra minute = 1 extra point  Example:  100 minutes =120 points  120 minutes = 140 points  200 points is the highest grade that I can give

22 Tutoring Times  Before school:  8-8:35 am on Monday, Wednesday, & Friday  Mrs. May has duty on Tues. & Thurs.  After school:  4-5 pm everyday  Mrs. May will notify the class if there are no tutoring on schoology & on board.
