House On Mango Street A collection of vignettes- short descriptive prose- that illuminate the themes of home, place and belonging, being a girl and how that shapes lives for better or worse, cultural identity, and growing up.
2
Journal About Home Write about a home or several homes you have lived in and felt strongly about. Be as descriptive as possible and write about the surrounding community as well. Definition of home: 1. The physical structure within which one lives, such as a house or an apartment. 2.A dwelling place together with the family or social unit that occupies it; a household. 3.a. An environment offering security and happiness. b. A valued place regarded as a refuge or place of origin.
3
Map Criteria Draw a map of one of your homes. Cover several “blocks” of a given area. Include at least five points of interest or importance. Beside each point of interest, write a brief description or story associated with this place. You do not have to be incredibly artistic to make a decent looking map with lots (at least five) of stories. Your map should convey your love, your history, your connection to a given place.

Discussion How does place affect who we are as people?
Which is the most defining factor the buildings or the other people? How has “place” figured into other novels we have read this year? What kinds of motifs (recurring images) have you noticed in the book so far? How do they extend the ideas in the book? Do you think that “boys and girls” live in different worlds? How so?
