Definition: Occupational health and safety is a cross-disciplinary concerned with protecting the safety, health and welfare of people engaged in work or employment.

Importance: Prevent amongst workers from health caused by their working conditions Protect workers in their employment from risks resulting from factors adverse to health Place and maintain the worker in an occupational environment adapted to his physiological and psychological capabilities

Employers’ responsibilities
Must provide: safe premises safe machinery and substances safe systems of work information, instruction, training and supervision for workers suitable working environment and facilities

Employee’s responsibilities
Take reasonable care for the health and safety of others in the workplace Cooperate with your employer to ensure safety Tell your supervisor or OHS representative about hazards or other safety matters you are aware of. Cooperating with your employer includes: wearing or using safety equipment supplied to you carrying out work in a safe manner following health and safety instructions using and maintaining machinery and equipment properly taking notice of signs adhering to speed limits participating in safety training.

Definition Example Hazard is something that can cause harm if not controlled Slippery/ unstable terrain Risk is a combination of the probability that a particular outcome will occur and the severity of the harm involved Slips, falls Incident is the harm that results from an uncontrolled hazard Injuries to back and leg
