The term «open source software» is more or less equivalent to «free sofware». Free software is a matter of freedom, not price. Public domain software is not copyrighted, if the source code is in the public domain, that is a special case. Copylefted sofware is free software whose distribution terms ensure that all copies of all versions carry more or less the same distribution terms, this shields the program, and its modified versions, from some of the common ways of making a program proprietary. There are many copyleft licenses, but two different copyleft licenses are usually incompatible. Then in practice nearly all copylefted software uses the GNU General Public License. If a program is free but not copylefted, then some copies or modified versions may not be free at all. For more information, see: http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/categories.html http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/categories.html
