Fractions What to study? How to write fractions How to compare fractions How to recognize equivalent fractions How to write mixed numbers How to add and subtract fractions
3
How to write fractions? A fraction represents parts of a whole, the numerator being the number of parts we have and the denominator being the total number of parts. Numerator _____________ Denominator 2 6 ___ 2 parts out of 6 Check out this website to introduce fractions www.beaconlearningcenter.com/weblessons/floweringfractions/default.htm
4
How to compare fractions When we compare we want to determine whether the fractions are equivalent, or if one is greater than the other. If the numerators are the same and denominators are different- THINK that the fraction with the bigger denominator is smaller BECAUSE the pieces are smaller!!! If the denominators are the same and the numerators are different, THINK that the fraction with the bigger numerator is bigger BECAUSE more pieces are taken up!!! IF both the denominators and numerators are different you have to THINK even harder!!! WHAT DO YOU DO?

Try to compare these fractions Remember your REASONS why? 2525 2828 4 10 7 10 2626 1414 To practice more with comparing Fractions Check out this website! http://www.visualfractions.com/compare.html > < >

How to recognize equivalent fractions Equivalent fractions are fractions that have the same value or represent the same part of an object. If a pie is cut into two pieces, each piece is also one-half of the pie. If a pie is cut into 4 pieces, then two pieces represent the same amount of pie that 1/2 did. We say that 1/2 is equivalent to 2/4. Go here to practice more about equivalent fractions: This is a wonderful site, but you have to scroll down to find where it Says Fractions: Equivalent http://nlvm.usu.edu/en/applets/controller/query/query.htm?qt=math&lang=en

How to write mixed numbers An improper fraction is a fraction that has a numerator larger than or equal to its denominator. A proper fraction is a fraction with the numerator smaller than the denominator. A mixed number a number consisting of a whole number and a fraction Can anybody tell me what this mixed number would be as an improper fraction? 15 4
9
How a mixed number is related to a improper fraction? Divide each circle in half. Shade 7 pieces. Show as an improper fraction & mixed number Improper Fraction =Mixed Number = 7 2 3 1 2

Practice more with Mixed Numbers Check this site out to make sure you know How to write mixed numbers!!!! www.visualfractions.com/mixedcircle.html

How to add fractions There are 2 Simple Steps to add fractions: Step 1: Make sure the bottom numbers (the denominators) are the same Step 2: Add the top numbers (the numerators). Put the answer over the the same denominator 2626 1616 + = 3 6
12
How to subtract fractions Practice adding & subtracting Fractions by going to this website below! http://fen.com/studentactivities/mathsplat/mathsplat.htm There are 2 Simple Steps to subtract fractions: Step 1: Make sure the bottom numbers (the denominators) are the same Step 2: Subtract the top numbers (the numerators). Put the answer over the the same denominator 6868 __ 2828 = 4 8
13
Unlike whole numbers, as the denominator of a fraction increases, the size of the fraction decreases TRUE OR FALSE? ABSOLUTELY, TRUE

How to problem solve with FRACTIONS!!!! Remember: You have to be able to problem solve with fractions, So DO NOT FORGET your problem solving steps! Who can remember what they are? 1.Re-read the problem as many times as needed 2. Organize your information to decide what you need to do 3. Answer the problem 4. Check your work! Does your answer make sense?
