WHY IT’S IMPORTANT

What is it? The SAT is a college entrance exam that tests what students know and how well they can apply that knowledge. It tests: –Reading –Math –Writing

Is it needed? Nearly every college or university in the U.S. uses SAT scores to determine students’ college readiness skills. SAT scores are combined with high school grades (GPA) to get a better understanding on the students

How long is it? The SAT is 3 hours and 45 minutes Reading (70 minutes) –67 questions Math (70 minutes) –54 questions Writing (60 minutes) –50 questions

How is it scored? Each section is scored on a 200-800 point scale, a total possible score of 2400. On the writing portion you get two subscores, a multiple-choice score from 20-80, and an essay score from 2-12.

How is it scored? Wrong answers get penalized 1/4 of a point (except math question where you enter your answer on a grid). Skipped questions don’t get penalized.

When should you take it? Most students take the SAT junior and senior year. It is recommended to take the exam twice.

SAT Subject Tests Subject tests are one-hour long, content- based tests to highlight a student’s interest in a specific subject. –Literature –Biology E/M, Chemistry, Physics –Mathematics Levels 1 &2 –U.S. History –World History –Languages (Spanish, French, Latin, Italian)

Fees SAT: $51 SAT Subject Tests: $24.50 –More than one add $13 each Late registration: $27.50 Fee waivers –You can receive up to two waivers for the SAT and up to two waivers for the subject tests. –Sign-up with your counselor to get a waiver.
