1 Welcome to Mrs. Novak’s class Strive for the impossible and be extraordinary! Arizona College Prep Erie Campus Erie Campus

2 Welcome back to American Sign Language 3 I am so excited that you have decided to continue your study of American Sign Language for a third year. This is “TRANSLATION” year! I want to share a few highlights of what this year will include: Introduction to American Deaf Culture study For Hearing People Only book study Building ASL Interpreting Skills ABC Monologues Extensive study of Idioms in ASL Interpreting: Live and Taped (Theater and School Assemblies)

3 Class Expectations 1. Come to class! This is a visual language. You need to be here to learn it. Chronic absences will have a negative effect on your grade. 2. Be prepared. If you do not know your vocabulary or we have an assignment to practice and you are not ready, you cannot participate this makes it difficult for your partner to participate. Know your vocabulary! 3. Be respectful to each other. We become a family of sorts- -treat each other well. 4. Show integrity--don't cheat. If I catch you I will fail you on the assignment--no second chances on this one. This also applies to other classes and the ACP faculty will contact me if students are seen using sign language during an assessment.

4 Survival Skills This year we have a goal for the class to be a TOTAL COMMUNICATION class. This means that in order to communicate in the class, you will need to either sign in ASL, or use Total Communication, signing and speaking. There will be no voicing without signing allowed. You still must practice expressive skills (signing) and receptive skills (receiving signs). This class time is meant to be taken seriously and I expect you to practice--not socialize. You will develop a personal dictionary and use websites to learn new signs to create monologues for the class. These will be recorded as well. Idiom monologues will also be practiced. We will be utilizing DVD samples and translating stories with your peers. We will continue to gloss stories from English to ASL. As a review of previous lessons and vocabulary, we will be creating a Master Conversation for chapters covered last year. This will include conversations with quizzes for the class. Lastly, you and a partner will practice interpreting books on tape. You will keep track of your progress in your personal dictionary.
