1. Planting the Seed Learning Targets: Identify a variety of seeds and what they are used for. Understand how they interact with seed-derived products in their daily lives.

2. Initial Thoughts (Write your thoughts in your journal) What does a cotton shirt, canola oil, and fruit have in common?

3. Group Activity (Table Partners) List how many different seeds or seed derived products you use in your daily life. You have five (5) minutes to create a list on the post its your group is given. Be prepared to share your ideas with the class.

4. Share Out Share examples with the class of items you use that come from seeds. While your listening to others think about whether this item is used as food, fiber, or fuel.

5. Class Activity On the bulletin board, use your groups post it notes to categorize the items as food, fiber, or fuel. Evaluate your responses. Did any seed related products surprise you? Which products were mentioned the most? Which products are the most important? What would happen if the product disappeared?

6. Watch and Listen While you’re watching this video, write down any vocabulary words that you don’t recognize in your journal. Don’t worry about spelling.

7. Questions (Write your thoughts in your journal) What do you think the inside of a seed looks like?

8. Group Stations Groups of 4 students. Tables are assigned as below: Teacher assigned Each group of 4 will do as follows: 1.Get your materials from the counter next to your group. 2.Use the handout to 3.Use the magnifying lens to observe the external anatomy of the seed. 4.Draw a sketch of the seed using the provided colored pencils. 5.Label your sketch with the seed coat, embryo, and endosperm. 6.Once each seed has been explored and sketched by a different member of the group, the group should create their own seed to product flow chart. (Examples on the whiteboard.) Wrap Up Activity: 1.Each group will pick their favorite seed to plant in the greenhouse. 2.Materials are provided by your teacher. 3.You must have your flow chart complete to do this. Materials are on the back table.
