Can be defined as an electronic device that performs rapid computations and generates desired output for users based on input data and programs.

DATA – is a collection of unprocessed items, which include numbers, audio videos, text and images.
INFORMATION – conveys meaning and is useful to people

4. CHARACTERISTICS OF COMPUTER
SPEED – millisecond (thousandth), microsecond (millionth), nanosecond (billionth) and picosecond (trillionth).

desktop computers

Is designed so that the system unit, input devices, output devices and any other devices fit entirely on under a desk or table.

Mobile device – similar to Mobile computer but it is small enough to hold in your hand.

Special type of notebook computer that you can interact with by touching the screen with your finger or a digital pen. (uses pressure rather than ink) it also uses voice input so that users can speak to a computer.
Convertible tablet has attached keyboard.
State tablet provides other means for typing.

18. MOBILE DEVICES
Small enough to carry in a pocket usually do not have hard drives instead using of special memory to store programs and other some use small storage such as memory cards.
Popular types: smart phones and PDA’s, e- book readers, handheld computers, portable media players and digital cameras

19. SMART PHONES AND PDAs
Smart phone – internet enabled phone, provides information, calendars appointment book, address book, calculator, notepad, send and receive .
Also provides portable media player, built-in digital cameras, cable of using word processing, spreadsheet, and games.

PDA – (Personal digital assistance) differs from smart phone in that is usually does not have phone capabilities and may not be internet-enabled, support voice input, built-in camera, function as portable media player.

Sometimes referred to as an Ultra-Mobile PC, a small PC that small enough to fit in one hand.

A large and expensive, powerful computer that can handle hundreds or thousands of connected users simultaneously.
Can also act as server
You can use terminals or personal computers to access the mainframe

Fastest, most powerful computer – and the most expensive.
Can process more than 1 quadrillion instructions in a single second
Can store 20,000 times than desktop computer

Special purpose computer that functions as a component in a larger product
