History of the Budapest Airport The new airport was opened in 1942, MALÉV the national airline was established in 1954, Passenger traffic reached 1 million in 1974, Terminal 2A was opened in 1985, Terminal 2B was opened in 1998, annual passenger traffic 3,9 million Passenger traffic reached 7.9 million in 2005, Privatisation of airport operation in 2005, Skycourt facility was opened in 2011.

Accessibility of the Airport Road connections: via highway nr 4. and M4 the city is 20 km and about 40 minutes away, Indirect connection to highway M0, and to the national highway system, Train connections with T1, 100 trains on daily basis, Public bus lines: one direct line between the airport and subway terminal station, 130-150 busses daily.

Airport Potential The number of population in the direct impact zone (inside the 10 km radius) was 390,000 in 2011, The population of the indirect impact zone (inside of the 40 km circle) was 2.6 million in 2011,

Economic Analysis of the Airport Revenue increased with 80% between 2007 and 2011, to reach 291 million EUR, Operating costs increased with 60%, reached 208 million EUR level in 2011, Financial costs doubled in 5 years, 111 million EUR in 2011, Result varied between -14 and -112 million EUR, Share of aviation revenue in the total, about 40%. Catchment Area Socio-Economic Profile Increasing population in the catchment area of the airport, Positive migration balance, both in the Budapest Districts and the metropolitan settlements, The immediate catchment area of Budapest ’ s Airport is becoming more densely populated, Unemployment rate increased from 7% to 10% in the last 4 years,

Catchment Area Socio-Economic Profile Service sector dominates the economy of the catchment area, The indirect catchment area provides about 40% of the total GDP volume of Hungary, FDI flow focuses with 67% on the Central Hungarian region, 87% of foreign visitors in Hungary choose Budapest as destination, Budapest is the 9th popular conference venue in Europe.

Catchment Area Socio-Economic Profile Central Hungary is not eligible for regional support under the Convergence objective, Under the Regional competitiveness and employment objective the Central Hungarian region received 900 million EUR funds (37% for transport infrastructure development).
