Numeracy- by using formulae in calculations Literacy- by writing well structured sentences and paragraphs ICT- by using Laptops and electronic resources Personal skills- team work, leadership Thinking and Learning skills- organisation, logic, participation, memory, exploration, creativity, judgement, planning, practice. Reflection- through self or peer assessment of each Learning Outcome Key Question: Quick Discussion: What do you already know? How is this lesson relevant to every day life? Useful acid and alkali reactions are applied in food preservation, soil treatment, hair and skin care and bee stings

02:12 Keywords: Neutralisation Acid Alkali Neutral Indicator Antacid Universal indicator Variables Here are some of the words we will be using this lesson… 1) Create sentences which use the keywords correctly. 2) Put your hand up if there is any key word from the list that you don’t know the meaning of.

02:12 New Information for Learning Outcome 1 Explore and Discover: Visual: Demonstration - What is neutralization? Audio: Kinaesthetic: The chemical reaction between an acid and an alkali is called neutralization. acid alkali a salt water What happens to the pH value of the reaction mixture during neutralization? The pH value of the reaction mixture becomes closer to 7.

02:12

Something that is not an acid or an alkali is said to be NEUTRAL Water is an example of a NEUTRAL SOLUTION An acid and alkali will neutralise each other if the correct amounts are used: Acid + alkaliSalt + water E.g. hydrochloric acid + sodium hydroxidesodium chloride + water Neutralisation

02:12 Learning Activities for Outcome 1 Worksheet 4.6.1 or Rainbow fizz Predict what will happen after you read the method Carry out experiment to see what happens when you add acids and alkalis together Record Results Extension: 1.Explain why the colours changed. 2.Does the reaction have a name? 3.Can you write a word equation to describe the reaction?

02:12 New Information for Learning Outcome 3 Explore and Discover: Applications of Neutralisation Visual: Audio: Kinaesthetic: Insect Stings Bee stings are acidic and can be neutralised with baking soda (bicarbonate of soda). Wasp stings are alkaline and can be neutralised with vinegar. Indigestion: Our stomach carries around hydrochloric acid. Too much of this leads to indigestion. To cure indigestion, you can neutralise the excess acid with baking soda or specialised indigestion tablets.

Useful acid-alkali reactions Useful acid-alkali reactions Food preservation – pickling involves soaking the food in vinegar which kills the bacteria which causes food to decay Hair and skin care – the best pH for skin is 5.5. Soaps containing very weak acids or alkalis can be used to get this pH level Stings – BEE stings are ACIDIC and are treated using an alkali such as calamine lotion which neutralises the acid of the sting. WASP stings are ALKALINE and are neutralised using an acid such as vinegar Soil treatment – acid rain can turn soil acidic. Some plants will not grow in acidic soil. The soil is neutralised using LIME which is an alkali
