© 2005 Pearson Education, Inc. Publishing as Longman Main Ideas and Supporting Details The main idea of a paragraph or essay is a broad or general statement. The details that support it are specifics. The details add more information about the main idea.

© 2005 Pearson Education, Inc. Publishing as Longman Finding Unstated Main Ideas Recognize the supporting details in a reading. Based on those details, decide what the main idea is for the passage.
