WHO? WHAT? WHERE? WHEN? HOW? AND WHY? ASK QUESTIONS TO SEE IF THERE IS TROUBLE… KEY PHRASES: A. IS IT OKAY WITH YOUR PARENTS? B. DO YOU HAVE ANY MONEY?

NAME THE TROUBLE TO HELP THE PERSON THINK ABOUT WHAT HE/SHE IS REALLY ASKING YOU TO DO. WORDS SUCH AS: SHOPLIFTING, ASSAULT, VANDALISM, AND TRESPASSING COULD MEAN LEGAL TROUBLE THINGS SUCH AS “MAKING FUN OF SOMEONE” MAY NOT BE ILLEGAL BUT ARE MEAN IT MAY BE DANGEROUS OR JUST PLAIN WRONG KEY PHRASES: “THAT’S MEAN” “THAT’S ILLEGAL”

STATE THE CONSEQUENCES TO HELP THE PERSON THINK ABOUT WHAT COULD HAPPEN. THERE ARE A VARIETY OF CONSEQUENCES: PHYSICAL, LEGAL, SOCIAL PROBLEMS FOR OTHERS AND FOR YOU KEY PHRASES: “IF I DID THAT I COULD GET HURT” “IF I DID THAT I JUST WOULDN’T FEEL RIGHT ABOUT IT” “IF I DID THAT, MY MOTHER WOULD BE SO MAD”

LET YOUR FRIEND KNOW YOU AREN’T REJECTING HIM/HER- JUST THE “TROUBLE” KEY PHRASE: “LET’S GO PLAY BASKETBALL” “LETS GO GET SOMETHING TO EAT” “LET’S STAY HOME AND PLAY GAMES”

MOVE IT MEANS YOU START WALKING AWAY SELL IT MEANS YOU MAKE YOUR ALTERNATE IDEA SOUND APPEALING- KEY PHRASES: “HEY, I KNOW WHAT WE CAN DO!” “LETS DO THIS INSTEAD, IT WOULD BE AWESOME!” LEAVE THE DOOR OPEN BY INVITING THE PERSON TO COME WITH YOU

STAY CALM SAY THE PERSON’S NAME, MAKE EYE CONTACT AND SAY “LISTEN TO ME” PAUSE TO SEE IF THE PERSON IS LISTENING IF THEY ARE LISTENING, CONTINUE TO USE THE REFUSAL SKILLS IF NOT LISTENING, THEN LEAVE SAYING SOMETHING LIKE “I’LL SEE YOU LATER
