To identify adjectives, proper adjectives, and compound adjectives To distinguish adjectives from pronouns

2 Part Definition Example
Noun A person, place, thing, or idea. Under the clouds, we felt like fish swimming in suntan oil. Pronoun A word that takes the place of one or more nouns Electra thought that her tattoo was larger than she expected. Verb A word or phrase that expresses action or a state of being The movie starts at 9:00. (action) The movie is terrible. (being) Adjective A word that modifies a noun or a pronoun That new blue sports car has aluminum rims and a high-tech GPS system.

3 To find adjectives, first find each noun and pronoun in a sentence.
Then ask: What kind? fresh air tall trees loud music strong winds Which one(s)? these windows that woman red carpets sleek dresses How many? twenty seats six men one car fifty cents How much? great amount small dose much help little aid

4 Adjective Placement Before a Noun
The cold, rough water made swimming hard. After a Noun The water, cold and rough, made swimming hard. After a Linking Verb The water is cold and rough.
