2 Nationalism/Home Rule Mainly Catholics Leader: John Redmond Aim: To establish a parliament in Dublin. Aim: to take control of Irish domestic affairs Home Rule would keep the link with Britain which would control foreign affairs.

3 Sinn Fein Meaning “ourselves alone” Formed in 1907 by Arthur Griffith Aims: to make Ireland a Republic completely independent of Britain To set up an Irish parliament: Dail Eireann in Dublin To elect an Irish government

4 The Unionists/Unionism Mainly Protestants The Unionist party was formed in 1885 by opponents of Home Rule The Protestants in Ulster feared a Catholic run Ireland They believed that “Home Rule is Rome Rule”-that an Irish parliament would discriminate against Protestants. Aim: to remain under British rule Feared: would loose trading links with Britain and would loose land gained during the plantations.

5 The Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB) A secret movement that used violence in their struggle to gain independence for Ireland Aim: to use any means necessary to defeat Britain and gain control of Ireland

6 The Irish Volunteers Formed in 1913 by Eoin Mac Neill Formed in direct response to the Ulster Volunteers set up in Ulster Aim: to guarantee the rights and liberties of the Irish people. By the outbreak of WW1 the estimated number of members was 180,000

7 Cumann na mBan Meaning the “Association of Women” Cumann na mBan emerged from the struggles of the suffragettes. Aim: was to assist in the arming, equipping, and support of Irishmen in the defence of Ireland
