EMK and How You Can Get Involved Ryerson University January 11 th, 2005
3
The EMK Vision Our Vision A multi-disciplinary world-leading infrastructure for research in the science and engineering of new materials. To be achieved with $20.6 million investment by Industry, Universities and the Ontario Government
4
The Benefits EMK offers industry and universities the opportunity to benefit from the accumulated and emerging knowledge of new materials through a network of 10 industrial members and more than 150 members at 9 universities.
5
Funding - leverage contributions to university research - total $20M over 5 years Network - university / industry contacts - meet New Faculty - influence research programs Research - Access university competences - Build internal knowledge - Gain insight into the latest materials research Benefits
6
Networking – Workshops Collaboration – Projects, Open call & Pre-booked Economic Gain Objectives
7
What is an Emerging Material ?
8
Design for Function Characterization Process for Preparation (eventually manufacturing) Theme Areas
9

Three Vehicles Open Call for Proposals Preliminary Pre-booked Projects Pre-booked Projects Projects
12
Open Call For Proposals Call for Proposals Sept 6 th, 2004 Open to all EMK Members Projects to be submitted in November 5 th ’04 Selection in January 2005 Projects start in March 2005
13
Preliminary Pre-booked Projects & Pre-booked Projects Open to all What are they ? Projects submitted by a researcher with the endorsement and funding commitment of an industrial sponsor.
14
PPP /Pre-booked Projects Generation of Projects – 2 means EMK Participants or MMO(Network Liaison Managers). Features Industrial partners contribute at least 50% of the cash award cash & 25% in-kind. Approval External Referees EMK PSC
15
PPP & Pre-booked Projects Advantages – in addition to then project to Industrial Partner with > $10,000 contribution Access to non- booked technologies developed in EMK Access to the Network Access to workshops To Researcher Access to the Network Access to workshops Eligibility to participate in open call
16
Preliminary Pre-booked Projects Known as “PPP” Similar to Pre-booked Projects Short Duration (3 to 12 months) Small $$ Contribution / funding The Purpose of PPP is to introduce Private Sector Participants to EMK
17
Pre-booked Projects Duration (12 to 36 months) Private sector Contribution $25,000 +
18
PPP /Pre-booked Projects Difference Approvals PPP abbreviated approval process Pre-booked Full approval process Both calls are “open for business” University information sessions being scheduled
19
Industrial Member IP Benefits First Rights to License Technologies Right to secure a stake in Projects of particular interest (“Booking” or “Pre-Booking”) Special status for Joint Inventions
20
How can I Participate in EMK ? Member Universities have a number of memberships for Existing Faculty EMK membership is open for New Faculty Membership allows designated faculty to apply for project funding PI’s on Pre-booked projects are automatically members of EMK
