2 Using Reference Maps, search the street address of Scarlett Middle School (3300 Lorraine, Ann Arbor, MI 48104.) First, determine the tract number, block group number, and then block number. Look at the map (level 4) to determine the street boundaries of the tract. HINTS 1. Choose Reference Maps 2. Change Selections/Geography 3. Change to Address Searching and Type Address 4. Make note of the tract, bg, and block numbers 5. Highlight BLOCK GROUP and SHOW MAP 6. Read the street boundaries of the tract on the map. 3 Exercise 2: Summary File 1 Using Data Sets and Census 2000 Summary File 1, find a detailed table showing all Chinese racial combinations reported for all of the census tracts in Ann Arbor City and the city as a whole. HINTS 1. Choose Data Sets/Census 2000 Summary File 1. 2. Click on Detailed Tables. 3. Change level to census tract. Wait for pop-up menus for state and county. Choose all tracts. NEXT. 4. Use the KEYWORD menu to search Chinese. Highlight the table that says Chinese – all reported races. ADD. 5. Once you have first table, CHANGE SELECTIONS/GEOGRAPHY. 6. Choose County level for new geography, then Michigan and Washtenaw. ADD http://factfinder.census.gov

4 Exercise 3: Summary File 2 Using Data Sets and Census 2000 Summary File 2, determine whether most Mexican households in Washtenaw County Census tracts own or rent their homes. HINTS 1. Choose Data Sets/Census 2000 Summary File 2. 2. Click on Detailed Tables. 3. Change level to census tract. Wait for pop-up menus for state and county. Choose all tracts. NEXT. 4. Browse through the List of Tables and choose the very first HCT table that mentions tenure. 5. Once you have first table, CHANGE SELECTIONS/choose racial or ethnic group. 6. 5 Exercise 4: Summary File 3 Using Data Sets and Census 2000 Summary File 3, determine which Census tract in Washtenaw County most uses the bus for commuting to work. HINTS 1. Choose Data Sets/Census 2000 Summary File 3. 2. Click on Detailed Tables. 3. Change level to census tract. Wait for pop-up menus for state and county. Choose all tracts. NEXT. 4. Choose Thematic Maps. 2. Change Selections/Geography if SF1 is default map. 3. Choose county level, then Michigan, then Washtenaw. 3. Show map. Then change level to block group. 4.
