Chapter 1

2 Health Health is the combination of your physical, mental/emotional, and social well-being. Your personal level of health affects everything about you It affects… How you look How you feel How you act Health is a personal responsibility.

3 Self-Inventory Please turn to page 3 and rate your personal health.

4 3 Elements of Your Health
1. Physical Health – The ability your body has to cope with stresses of normal daily life. Proper nutrition, regular physical activity, enough rest and sleep, good hygiene, regular dental and medical checkups.

2. Mental & Emotional Health – Includes your feelings about yourself. A person using his or her mind to develop thinking skills. A person with good mental and emotional health is in touch with their feelings and avoid dwelling on negative thoughts.

Social Health – Includes the way you get along with others. Includes… Your ability to make and keep friends Work and play in cooperative ways Seeking and lending support when necessary Also communicating well and showing respect.

7 Wellness Wellness – An overall state of well-being, or total health.
Wellness comes from a way of living each that day includes making decisions and practicing behaviors that are based on health knowledge and healthful attitudes. Achieving wellness is an ongoing, lifelong commitment to all aspects of health.

8 The Health Continuum Please turn to page 7 in your book and come up with three behaviors that would help a persons health move toward the right side of the Health Continuum and then 3 that would make it move to the left side of the continuum.

9 Promoting Your Health Lifestyle Factors – personal behaviors and habits related to the way a person lives, that help determine his or her level of health. Get between seven to eight hours of sleep per night

10 Promoting Your Health Get between seven to eight hours of sleep per night. Eat nutritious foods from the various food groups each day. Refrain from smoking and using tobacco products. Eat breakfast daily. 20-30 minutes of nonstop vigorous activity a minimum of 3x per week. Do no use alcohol or other drugs Maintain a recommended body weight.

11 Prevention Prevention – practicing healthy habits to keep a person well and free from disease and other ailments. Examples include: Wearing seat belts, applying sunscreen, avoiding unsafe areas, and using protective gear when playing sports. Are there any others you practice?

12 Health Education The providing of accurate health information in such a way as to influence people to change attitudes so that they take positive action about their health.

13 Health Literate An individual’s capacity to obtain, interpret, and understand basic health information and services and use such information and services in ways that promote his or her health and wellness.

14 A Health Literate Person Must Be…
A critical thinker and problem solver – able to evaluate information from reliable sources before making decisions. A responsible productive citizen – chooses safe, healthful, and legal behaviors that keep with family guidelines and show respect for others and themselves. A self-directed learner – able to gather and use accurate, current health information throughout life. An effective communicator – Effective communication is the ability to express one’s knowledge, beliefs, and the ideas in a variety of forms.
