Objectives and Background 1. The student will be able to actively research a chosen disease in a proficient manner. 2. The student will be able to put together and present a PowerPoint presentation.

Task Definition Students will research a disease for Health class and be able to present a slide show on the topic. Students must select a topic and have it approved by the teacher. The teacher and students will also brainstorm and generate an outline and rubric for the assignment.

Information Seeking Strategies Students brainstorm and decide that possible sources for information about diseases would be: textbooks, encyclopedias, and medical websites.

Location & Access The media specialist helps some students access WebMD and the Mayo Clinic website. Other students look in the encyclopedia for their topics.

Use of Information A student takes notes from WebMD using his own words. A student has the media specialist photocopy pages out of the encyclopedia for her.

Synthesis Each student creates his/her own slide show and presents it.

Evaluation The teacher discusses the assignment with the class. They talk about what they felt was the hardest part of the assignment. The students complete a self-reflection about their assignment.

I-SAIL Standards Standard 1: Accesses information efficiently and effectively to inquire, think critically, and gain knowledge. Standard 2: Evaluates information critically and competently to draw conclusions, make informed decisions, apply knowledge to new situations, and create new knowledge. Standard 3: Uses information accurately, creatively, and ethically to share knowledge and participate ethically and productively as members of our democratic society.
