Based on universal design concept from architecture (curb cut-outs) Focus on the curriculum and its limitations How do these limitations disable learners? The burden of adaptation should be placed on the curricula, not the learner Eliminating the barriers without eliminating the challenges No longer focusing on just the “average” student (not the bowling ball)
3
Turning novice learners into expert learners: *individuals who want to learn *individuals who know how to learn strategically *individuals who are well prepared for life-long learning *focus on all students
4
The Concept: UDL is a framework that addresses the primary barrier to fostering expert learners within instructional environments: inflexible, “one-size-fits-all” curricula The Framework: Encourages creating flexible designs from the start that have customizable options, which allow all learners to progress from where they are and not to find where we would have imagined them to be.
