PARKINSON’S DISEASE By Courtney and Niral
2
WHAT IS IT? Parkinson's disease (PD) is chronic and progressive movement disorder, meaning that symptoms continue and worsen over time. It is idiopathic
4
WHAT DOES IT AFFECT? Parkinson’s involves the malfunction and death of vital nerve cells in the brain, called neurons. Some of these dying neurons produce dopamine, a chemical that sends messages to the part of the brain that controls movement and coordination. As PD progresses, the amount of dopamine produced in the brain decreases, leaving a person unable to control movement normally.
6
SYMPTOMS: tremor of the hands, arms, legs, jaw and face slowness of movement rigidity or stiffness of the limbs and trunk postural instability or impaired balance and coordination
8
PROGRESSION?... YES The progression of Parkinson’s disease varies among different individuals. Parkinson's is both chronic, meaning it persists over a long period of time, and progressive, meaning its symptoms grow worse over time. It can lead to death.
10
TREATMENT: Prescription Medications Over-the-Counter Medications Surgical Treatments- brain stimulating surgery Treatment alleviates symptoms but there is no cure
