Magnesium Magnesium is a metal therefore on the periodic table it is found on the left with the metals . Magnesium can be extracted from the minerals dolomite and carnallite , but is most often obtained from seawater .
4
Discovery of Magnesium
Magnesium was recognized as an element in 1755 by Black .Davy isolated it in Bussy recognized it in coherent form in Etymological origin of name : From the Greek word "Magnesia", a district of Thessaly . For Magnesia is where it gets its chemical symbol .
5
Magnesium in natural form :
Magnesium metal is light, silvery-white, and relatively tough. The metal tarnishes slightly in air. Finely divided magnesium ignites upon heating in air, burning with a bright white flame .
6
Uses Magnesium is used in pyrotechnic and incendiary devices. It is alloyed with other metals to make them lighter and more easily welded . Such as in airplanes, missiles and rockets .
7
Sources Magnesium is the 8th most abundant element in the earth's crust. While it is not found free it nature, it is available in minerals including magnesite and dolomite. The metal may be obtained by electrolysis of fused magnesium chloride derived from brines and seawater.
8
How it reacts with other metals :
Finely divided magnesium ignites upon heating in air, burning with a bright white flame . At room temperature it is a solid . This element is found natural .
