Discovered by Georg Brandt at 1735 in Sweden. He had been trying to demonstrate that the blue color of glass was because of a new element, cobalt, rather than bismuth, an element often found in the same locations as cobalt.

Common uses Cobalt is known to improve rechargeable batteries and can be an important part of the battery systems of hybrid electric vehicles. Fighting Cancer Cobalt can treat some forms of cancer in the form of cobalt-60, a radioactive isotope of the element that produces gamma rays. Cobalt- 60 can also be used to sterilize medical supplies.
