Explain the Role of an Operating System and List the Main Operation Systems used on Today’s Computers

 One type of system hardware is the operating system, which contains instructions that coordinate all of the activities of the hardware devices in a computer.  System software serves as the interface between you (the user), your application software, and your computer’s hardware.

Operating systems used today  Stand alone – windows 7 is Microsoft's fastest, most efficient operation system to dated, offering quicker program start up, multitasking, built-in diagnostics, automatic recovery, improved security, enhanced searching and organizing, and easy-to-use interface.  Mac OS X – is system that supports multitasking and is available only for computers manufactured by Apple. The latest version, Mac OS X Lion.

Emerging Operating Systems Chrome OS  This system has a potential to revolutionize computing in Google. This based on Google Android, which is an operating system designed to work exclusively with web-based and cloud-based applications and to run on Chrome book computers.

Embedded Operating Systems  Operating system on mobile devices and many consumer electronics. This resides on an internal chip, rather than a hard drive. This system allows users to interact with hundreds of thousands of applications, known as apps. Three popular embedded operating systems are Apple’s iOS, Google Android, and Blackberry OS.

Define and Describe a user Interface and a Graphical user Interface  A user interface- controls how you enter data or instructions(input) and how information is presented on the screen(output).  A graphical user interface- or GUI (pronounced goober), combines text, graphics, and other visual cues to make software easier to use.

Examples of graphical/ user

Application Software/ Application Programs:  Programs designed to perform specific tasks for users.

Uses of application software/programs  Productivity/business tool  Assisting with graphics & multimedia  Supporting school & professional activities  Helping with home & personal activities  Facilitating communications

Starting a Software Application

 you can start an application by clicking its program name on a menu or in a list  the application is then displayed in a window on the desktop

Working with Software Applications

 creating documents  editing the documents  inserting text, maps, tables, charts, video, sound  deleting  cutting, copying, pasting  formatting: font, font size, font style  printing and saving

 create  edit  format  insert images, clips, sound, charts, tables  print  save  Auto Correct  Templates  columns  mail merge

 the integration of some data sets between the programs  ex. Microsoft Office

Creating documents

Word Processing Documents

 open Microsoft Word  add text & headers & footers & page numbers  add clip art or import images, videos  edit borders  set margins  spell check  use templates

PowerPoint Presentations

Excel Spreadsheets

 uses databases- collection of data organized in a manner that allows access, retrieval, & use of that data  you can add, change, and delete data; sort & retrieve data  create forms and reports

Why is the use of video authoring and editing software important for K-12 schools?

Special Effects  Modify segments of video  Add and remove clips  Add special effects  Edit or add audio components  Popular programs  iMovie  iLife  Movie Maker  Final Cut

What is the difference between software application, web application, and app?

Differences  Software applications are used to perform specific tasks for the user  Web applications allow users to access and interact with software from any computer or device that is connected to the internet  Apps (also called mobile apps) are usually multipurpose software  Programs downloaded primarily on your mobile device  Often single purpose program—games, social networking, coupons, weather

How do you work with different versions of software applications?

Different Versions  Note Taking Software  Enables user to enter typed text, handwritten comments, graphs, drawings or sketches  Spell check, font sizes, adding colors  Word Processing Software  Used to create, edit and format documents that consist primarily of text  Documents  Create, delete  Copy, past, print

Different Versions  Spreadsheet Software  Allows the user to organize numeric data in rows and columns  Cell, lable, value, formula, function  Database Software  Collection of date organized in a manner that allows access, retrieval and use of that data  Records, fields

Different Versions  Presentation Graphic Software  Use to communicate ideas, messages and other information to groups like classes, or people in an auditorium  Slides, monitor, overhead transparencies
