3 Project Management by the Book vs. Reality

4 About Project Complexity  Good project managers often lose the battle to manage the challenging projects undertaken by companies today, even when they manage by the book.  (This is because) project managers are still trained to create order through predictability, but not to manage transitions from one state to another, where a new and more advantageous basis for understanding the future work arises. Complex projects call for management thinking that matches a project’s unpredictability. Amtoft and Vestergaard (2004)

5 What You Will Learn  Even experienced PMs can suddenly find they are dealing with complex issues - wicked problems that don’t respond to the usual remedies and that threaten their program and can ruin their careers.  You will learn:  How to recognize interactive complexity in programs and projects  Techniques for dealing with impacts of complex interactions on organizational functions, structure, processes and measurement and control  Leadership capacities and competencies necessary to effectively deal with complexity  The relationship of complexity to organizational learning and knowledge management, program and portfolio management, and program maturity modeling

6 Instructor Affiliations John Pourdehnad, PhD : For more than 35 years, John has been a consultant, educator, and practitioner in organizational management, using systems thinking as a world view and communicating its implications for management with for- profit and not-for-profit organizations, and with government agencies. John holds an appointment at University of Pennsylvania where he has taught organizational studies, project management, systems and design thinking, and complex project management at the undergraduate and graduate level. Larry M. Starr, PhD : Larry is a consultant and educator in strategic management, health care, and higher education—with a focus on use of systems and design thinking and practice to better understand and to solve complex challenges. He retired from appointments at the University of Pennsylvania in 2014 where for 12 years he was executive director, academic chair and professor of Organizational Dynamics, and accepted an appointment as Adjunct Faculty and Program Architect at Philadelphia University to design a new kind of interdisciplinary professional doctorate in leadership.
