1 Functional Groups  Carbohydrates - A number of hydroxyl groups and a carbonyl group Lipids - 3 fatty acids are linked to a glycerol through dehydration synthesis 1. Glycerol (an alcohol) – 3 carbons each containing a hydroxyl group 2. Fatty acid – carboxyl group and a hydrocarbon chain with ~ 15 other carbon atoms Amino Acid – (building blocks for proteins) Carboxyl group and Amino Group Nucleic Acids (DNA, RNA) - phosphate group

2  Make a paper showing the basics of the 4 main types of macromolecules  Setup ◦ Box in the middle include:  definition  3 facts  Picture of polymer/monomer ◦ Divide the paper into 4 boxes (Carbohydrates, Lipids, Proteins, and Nucleic Acids)  Each box should include:  Definition  3 facts  Structural formula  3 pictures of examples

3 Carbohydrates: Definition: 3 Facts: - Carbohydrates: Definition: 3 Facts: - Macromolecules Definition: 3 Facts: - Macromolecules Definition: 3 Facts: - DRAW structural formula DRAW 3 examples General picture of polymer & monomer
