8 ►A►A►A►A Franciscan father was sailing with Sebastián Rodríguez Cermeño named a bay San Francisco on November 7, 1595. the Spanish established a military post and an Franciscan mission on the end of the beautiful peninsula. A little town was founded around the mission. The town was taken over by the United States. It was renamed San Francisco in 1847 and became a city in 1850. ►W►W►W►When gold was discovered in California in 1848, the city's population jumped to 10,000. ►S►S►S►San Francisco experienced the nation's most destructive earthquake in 1906, and fire followed, almost destroying the entire city! San Francisco was then rebuilt and grew quickly as a leading center for transportation, industry, and culture. ►T►T►T►The American explorer and soldier John C. Frémont, named the entrance to San Francisco Bay the Golden Gate, and the famous Golden Gate Bridge was dedicated in May 1937.
