1
Rate My Health A Smartphone Application for Benchmarking Individual Health Status to the Health Indicators Warehouse
2
Motivation Improvements in health are best accomplished through empowering the individual to make wise choices about his/her health. We suggest that providing people the ability to directly compare their health status against relevant national and local indicators stored in the Health Indicators Warehouse will give individuals the motivation and knowledge needed to make improvements in their own health.
3
Background The Rate your Health module is incorporated into an existing smart phone application built for individuals to record and retrieve health data related to medications, chronic diseases, and observations of daily living. The information repository for an individuals data is the personal health record provided by Google, which adheres to the Continuity of Care Record (CCR) standard.
4
Selection of Indicators Indicators for the initial pilot were selected based on the following criteria: ▫Relevance to a college population ▫Reported on individual health behavior or status ▫Presented questions that could be answered using a smart phone application ▫At least one that has gender and age based indicators Information could be compared to data stored in the Health Indicator Warehouse (HIW)
5
Indicators Selected % of adults vaccinated against seasonal flu % of students receiving prevention/health information from their college or university Average number of reported unhealthy days per month Percent of adults that report excessive drinking Number of who have smoked at least 100 cigarettes in lifetime and report smoking cigarettes
6
Objective - Personalized Retrieval The current application can customize the data retrieval from the HIW to pull information based on: ▫Gender ▫Age ▫Location In the future, we hope to include search criteria based on: ▫Risk factors ▫Current health status ▫Medical information (medications, diagnosis, test results)
7
Google Health Repository for personal health information can be extended using laboratory test fields to accept individual responses to certain indicator questions for the purpose of trending Important demographic, medical history, and current medical information be used to refine the search to the HIW and other data sources
8
Technical Design Built using the iOS SDK Interfaces with Google for Public Health Record Interfaces with HIW for indicators
9
Future Direction – Mobile Apps Evaluate user feedback on modules: ▫Ease of use ▫Relevance ▫Usage Working with HIW and other source, provide richer feedback on individual prevention and health management recommenations Refine information retrieval and presentation based on individual health information and status Suggest modifications to health indicator warehouse as necessary to support individuals
10
Innovation Integrates HIW into an interactive mobile application used by individuals to manage their health Demonstrates ability to access the HIW using a smart phone and industry standard APIs Stores individual responses into a personal health record Has potential to collect and track real-time health status for a community such as the one at and around The University of Connecticut
