1
SWBAT identify the 4 characteristics all plants have in common.
2
Plants Multicellular organisms Eukaryotes (nucleus) Autotrophs (make their own food) ▪ Sunlight - the energy for photosynthesis
3
For plants to survive on Dry land, they must: have ways to obtain water and other nutrients from their surroundings retain water transport materials in their bodies support their bodies reproduce
4
Plants get water by absorbing it through the roots in the soil Once water is inside a plant, there is a waxy, waterproof layer on the leaves called the cuticle that helps prevent water loss
5
Plants need to move water and minerals from the roots to the rest of the plant and energy from the leaves to the roots – larger plants need vascular tissues Vascular tissue – a system of tube like structures inside a plant through which water, minerals, and food move.
6
Sexual Reproduction A sperm cell and an egg cell join forming a fertilized egg called a zygote
7
Nonvascular Plants – plants that lack a well developed system of tubes for transporting water and other materials. These are low growing and do not have roots for absorbing water from the ground, they get it from their surroundings. They live in damp, shady places where they can get water easily.
8
Vascular Plants – Plants with true vascular tissue Better suited to life in dry areas than nonvascular The vascular tissue provides strength, stability and support They can grow quite tall like a Redwood Trees
