Aviation Grids – new efforts Gridded TAF verification How good are the grids? CondCat grids Correspond to TEMPO groups Altimeter setting trace Side effect from support for Upper Big Branch Mine accident April 15, 2010ER Subregional Aviation Conference

An aviation weather revolution! April 15, 2010 ER Subregional Aviation Conference The days of text-only forecasting are over! + Aviation forecast products need to be: Graphical or text/graphic hybrid Areal as well as point-based Highly detailed in space and time Frequently updated Human parsable
4
New Products April 15, 2010 ER Subregional Aviation Conference Recent National Examples LAMP/CCFP hybrid National cig/vis grids from NCAR LAMP probability graphics Graphical AIRMETs RLX Efforts Probability of Thunder (PoT) Grids Terminal Status Board KML (Google Earth) Displays
5
Probability of Thunder Grids (PoT) Generated every hour out to 7 days Used to create Wx grids, and therefore incorporated into public forecast products and TAFs Can be generated either manually by forecaster or via smart tools that use model parameters (CAPE, LI, K) or ensemble data (SREF) RLX Graphical Forecasts April 15, 2010 ER Subregional Aviation Conference
6
Probability of Thunder Grids (PoT) Has been (and will be) used in aviation-specific data displays In combination with enhanced short term forecasting philosophy, allows for a frequently updated, detailed areal convective forecast RLX Graphical Forecasts April 15, 2010 ER Subregional Aviation Conference
7
Terminal Status Board Quick overview of problematic parameters at chosen airports Configurable by user for as many or as few terminals as desired Detailed parameters can be accessed via either mouse float or mouse click Useful for situational awareness and decision making processes Aviation Test Bed April 15, 2010 ER Subregional Aviation Conference
8
Terminal Status Board Four columns: current, 0-3 hour forecast, 3-6 hour forecast, 6+ hour forecast Colors: green (VFR), yellow (MVFR), red (IFR), purple (LIFR) – can be configured for other parameters and for airport-specific thresholds Aviation Test Bed April 15, 2010 ER Subregional Aviation Conference

Aviation KML Displays Example of using man/machine mix to present information in a concise display for CWSUs Present data from TAFs, NDFD, LAMP, and RUC13 to aid in decision making Uses KML files which can be displayed by several programs, including Google Earth http://www.erh.noaa.gov/rlx/kml April 15, 2010 ER Subregional Aviation Conference
10
Aviation KML Displays Box/triangle represents forecast trend of PoT Inner triangle – 0 to 3 hr fcst, outer box – 3-6 hr fcst, both color coded Triangle points down/up (worse/better conditions) for increasing/decreasing PoT http://www.erh.noaa.gov/rlx/kml April 15, 2010 ER Subregional Aviation Conference
