3  What was the New Deal?  A series of economic programs passed by Congress between 1933- 1936.  Focused on the 3 R’s  Relief  For unemployed and poor  Civilian Conservation Corp  Recovery  Of the economy  WPA and PWA  Reform  To prevent another depression.  FDIC and SS

4 “Recovery” in New Deal Chicago  Works Progress Administration (WPA)  Created 40,000 jobs  Public Works Administration (PWA)  Examples of projects  Lake Shore Drive  Lincoln Park  State Street Subway  30 new public schools and parks  3 public housing projects  Enlarging of Midway Airport  Murals and Writing Projects

8  It gave the government too much power.  Chicago Machine Politics  It did not do enough.  A lot of people were still unemployed.  Government programs were only for a chosen few.  It did not end the depression.  Government spending did not necessarily mean relief for everyone.  World War II

9 1933-1934 Century of Progress Exposition  Celebrated Chicago’s 100 th Birthday and scientific progress.  39 million visitors  427 acres of artificially created lakeshore land  Northerly Island (Meigs Field)  Attractions  82 miles of exhibits  200 ft tall thermometer  African Diamond Mine  Dinosaur Bones  Sally Rand’s Famous Fan Dance  Created many jobs for people in Chicago

10 Depression Era Outlaws?  John Dillinger  A bank robber and public enemy #1  Killed outside the Biograph Theater in Chicago on July 22, 1934.  Dillinger was a hero to people as he was known to destroy mortgage papers.  Memorial Day Massacre in 1937  10 steel strikers were killed by the police, while 30 other were wounded.

11  What was the New Deal?  What two government agencies tried to help Chicagoans out of the depression? Give two examples of projects funded by these agencies.  Was the New Deal a good or a bad thing for Americans? EXPLAIN!  Why might Depression Era “outlaws” be considered heroes?
