3. Entrance Ticket Quiz and Oral Review
Students will begin the lesson today with the comprehension quiz for chapter 7.
After quiz, have students summarize the chapter that they read last night.
Ask: What was the chapter mostly about?
After summary, return yesterday’s entrance and exit tickets and address major misconceptions

4. The Onion: Close Reading of Pages 116-117
Direct students to the chapter title, Onions.
Students share something their triad noticed.
Reread learning targets 2 and 3.
Read aloud pages
What is Esperanza’s job in the camp?
What does visualize the memory mean?
What is Esperanza doing with her mind in order to help her figure out how to sweep?

5. Close Read Looking at page 117 What does tittering mean?
How does Esperanza feel after Marta calls her Cinderella? What does she do?
What specific words in the text help you know what Esperanza is feeling?
Add examples to the Inferring Using Text Clues Anchor Chart

6. Isabel Questions
Students work in triads. Begin a page about Isabel. Students write a basic description of Isabel. Create a Charater T-Chart: left side for challenges Isabel faces, right side for how she responds. Distribute the Text-Dependent Questions, Ch.7

7. Understanding Point of View and Visualizing
Read learning target; “I can describe how the points of view of Esperanza and other characters influence the description of events” Discuss point of view. Read paragraphs 1&2 on p Students should close eyes and listen as description of the camp is read. Students then sketch what they saw in their minds eye.

8. Understanding Point of View
Assign half triads to pretend they are Esperanza and half are Isabel. Think, reread and use evidence flags to mark important passages. Pair one Esperanza and one Isabel to share

9. Independent Writing
Distribute index cards. Respond to: “How does Esperanza respond differently to the challenges of life in the camp than Isabel does? Based on these differences, what do you think the author wants us to infer about Esperanza’s character? Use detail from text in answer.

10. Debrief
Students choose one learning target they feel they really accomplished in this lesson. Share with partner. Choose one they struggled with and share with partner. Add to READING ESPERANZA RISING Chart: Creating visual images and any suggestions from the students
