2 INTRO TO ANTI-WAR VIETNAM Ngo Dinh Diem assassinated in 1963, which created an anarchy leading to the involvement of the U.S. The war started off with the advisory of President Kennedy and then escalated to Johnson’s decisions of bombing and ground forces.

4 STUDENTS FOR A DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY SDS held its first meeting in 1960 on the University of Michigan campus at Ann Arbor, Michigan. Put together many of the Vietnam protest demonstrations. Formed the Port Huron Statement.

6 UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN PROTEST In 1965, teachers at the University of Michigan organized a "teach-in" in opposition to the war in March. The event was repeated at 35 other campuses across the country.

7 MORATORIUM MARCH 1967 Believed to be one the largest protests in U.S. history. Nearly 100,000 protesters gathered to protest against the war in Vietnam and another 50,000 protesters marched to the Pentagon.

8 RESULT OF MORATORIUM MARCH The Johnson administration responded to the protest by launching a propaganda campaign in attempt to restore the public’s confidence in its handling of the war.

9 MUHAMMAD ALI REFUSES ARMY INDUCTION “I ain’t got no quarrel with those Vietcong.” – Muhammad Ali June 20, 1967. Ali was given a penalty of a prison sentence and a three year ban from boxing.

10 GALLUP VOTE First Gallup vote took place in 1967. 52% of Americans disproved of Johnson’s handling with the war. In1969 that percentage later increased to 58%.

11 TET OFFENSIVE On Jan. 1968 an event called the Tet Offensive by Northern Vietnam was launched against the U.S. and was a success. This sent waves of shock and discontent across the America and sparked the most intense period of anti-war protests to date.

12 SHOOTINGS AT KENT STATE UNIVERSITY On May 4, 1970 at Kent State University students held a protest against the Vietnam war. Ohio National Guard called in. Result: 4 killed and 9 wounded

13 THE END OF THE WAR The Vietnam War finally ended when for the U.S. when Congress denied South Vietnam’s request for aid. Eventually the war also ended for Vietnam in July, 1976. End Result: U.S. had more than 50,00 dead S. Vietnamese estimated 400,000 dead N. Vietnamese estimated over 900,000
