Classroom Applications for the Run Chart Presented by: Cindy Arkebauer and Carol Schoening

Where does the Run Chart fit into the PDSA Cycle?

Why use the Run Chart in the Classroom? It helps collect and interpret data. It helps create a picture of what is happening in the situation you are analyzing. It helps find patterns in the data allowing for valuable insights. It helps compare one section of data to another, helping to check for changes.

Ways to use the Run Chart How many and what kind of injuries happened on the playground? How did students score on weekly spelling tests? How many new words were used in a piece of writing? How many library books were checked out during a specific period of time? How many hot lunches were served each day? How many errors were made on a specific type of test?

Things to Remember about the Run Chart Gather as much data as possible before creating the chart. This will help you decide what numbers to use on vertical side of the chart. Try collecting data on check sheets first. This makes transferring the data easier. Be sure you have enough data to analyze. Run charts show data collected in time order.
