Which Model? When? What Order?
Benchmarking Use this process when a system needs total rework, redesign or a complete new process SDSA Use this model when a process needs to be standardized, before it can be improved PDSA Use this process when you have a system in place that you want to improve (and there is already a process in place for this system)

What is SDSA? It is the process of aligning and strengthening the information you will be addressing during an actual PDSA. It is the process of getting all stakeholders to look at and interpret data in the same way.

Why is SDSA important? It allows for the design, writing and reviewing of content before launching a new process or working on a current improvement process. It allows for the alignment and strengthening of any planning process. It allows for good communication about what is being developed with all stakeholders. It allows time to do trials of data collection, as well as identifying inconsistencies with the process.

When should you use SDSA?
When there is the possibility of a wide variance in both approach and deployment of the improvement process being addressed. When undertaking a brand new process and detailed planning and analyzing should be done before implementation.

Questions to be answered during the SDSA…
What information / data will need to be collected and analyzed before making changes in a program or process? What are the critical measures of success? How is data analyzed and used to make decisions? How do you address the needs of all stakeholders?

On the Process Diagram subsystems are identified but how do you address the influences they have on the larger system needed to be improved? In the Deployment Flowchart stakeholders are identified but how do their roles really influence the improvement process? How do you address improvements with the areas that could be changed?

Standardize Clearly identify how all stakeholders think
the system operates. Need to Complete: background information, system definition, project statement and operational definition, process diagram. Use these Tools: Affinity, Cause and Effect, NGT, Relations or Scatter to help define.

Standardize Stakeholders should use a quality tool or create a narrative description of the way the process actually works. Use these Tools: Affinity, Flow Chart, NGT, Relations, Sampling or Scatter Diagram

Standardize Create your data gathering plan.
Be aware of variables which could affect the data which you are going to collect. Use these Tools: Affinity, Control Charts, Check Sheet, Histogram, NGT, Operational Definition, Pareto, Sampling

Do Run the system consistently.
Consider “trial classrooms” to look for trouble areas then go school wide and again, look for trouble areas. Complete check sheet or other data record. Use these Tools: Force Field Analysis, Process Diagram

Study Collect data, information and knowledge about how the system works. Complete analysis tools and possibly a narrative interpretation Use these Tools: Control Charts, Force Field, Histogram, Pareto, Sampling

Act Develop feedback systems to maintain consistency and make continual improvement. Develop written action statements to keep the system stable and consistent. Use these Tools: Affinity, Flow Chart, Histogram, Pareto,

What do you do after SDSA?
SDSA - Aligning the system needed to be improved - Broad focus of whole system - Is everyone thinking and interpreting things the same way? PDSA - Taking the standardized data from the SDSA and start with a PDSA. - narrowing down to the critical few - what will everyone do together

SDSA in a Nutshell Use SDSA to help define the data you will be collecting, assessing and improving to help make the improvement process consistent for all stakeholders. Use the SDSA to encourage “learning by doing” for all stakeholders so that “not doing” does not become an option.

Let’s Try it Out… With your SIP / BLT team plan how you would use the SDSA to help you with one of your SIP goals this year. Design a SDSA indicating which tools you will try to use along each step of the process. Along with the tool name, identify the specific information you would like to learn from each tool’s data. Report out to group.
