1 What is Mesh? Mesh is short for “Mesh Model”. These are 3D objects created outside of OpenSimulator using tools that save objects as an outer surface that is a mesh or blanket of triangles. There are many formats for saving mesh models. The formats have evolved over time with tools that create them. Most formats can be converted (imported/exported) within your tool of choice. OpenSimulator uses the Collada format with.dae file extensions. A few free tools for creating, manipulating, and/or converting Collada mesh models for use in OpenSimulator are listed below: ToolUse Blendermodel creation Sketchup (free for non-commercial use)model creation Wings3Dmodel creation MeshLabconversion

2 How does it work with OpenSimulator? A mesh model can be uploaded into OpenSimulator using the preferred MOSES STTC Viewer (based on Firestorm) or using the current SecondLife Viewer. Some newer (v. 2) viewers may show mesh models in-world, but may not upload them. Older viewers (v. 1) won’t show meshes properly. They are seen as a few odd triangle prims.

3 Where to get models? There are many locations for finding 3D models on the Internet, such as: – sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse Comprehensive library of free models Some downloadable directly as Collada Caution: For various reasons, many models don’t properly convert, upload or rez in OpenSimulator The preferred library for MOSES is the ADL 3D Repository

4 ADL 3D Repository: 3dr.adlnet.gov It can be located from the MOSES LINKS tab: You will need to register for an account to download these models. 2 1

6 Getting the models from ADL Check for a welcome message from ADL using the email account used during registration On the ADL site, Login with your new account Search, Click Tabs, Models or View All 1 2 3 4

7 Download a Collada (.dae) model to your computer 1 2

9 Set options before uploading 1.Upload Display – Zoom in – Show included textures 2.“Upload Options” tab – Include Textures – Alter scale (64m max) for full scale vehicles and buildings 1 2 2 1

10 Set options before uploading 1.“Level of Detail” tab to identify the display resolutions at distances 2.“Physics” Tabs for the “physics hull” (shape of the interaction with in- world objects) 1 2

11 Upload the model to your Inventory Even though this is a $0 upload cost, you will still need to: 1.Click “Calculate Weights and Fees” – Models with >64k Vertices will not upload to the server 2.Click “Upload” 1 2

12 Rez the mesh model in-world Rez the model in-world simply by dragging from Inventory to world Like a Sculpty Object, most prim edit features are still available (except “flexibility” and the mesh itself)
